POPUP

Like a pop-up ad on Netscape Navigator in December 1996, inspiration can arrive suddenly and refuse to close.

After a brief conversation with Claude, the hourglass started spinning and new pop-up advertisements appeared faster than it once took to connect to AOL. Gemini supplied imagery inspired by banner ads of yore, while modern AI rebuilt one of the internet’s oldest and most universally despised experiences with almost alarming efficiency.

That contradiction is the point. Brand-new systems are being used to resurrect interfaces from the internet’s awkward childhood, complete with blinking offers, dubious buttons, overlapping windows, and the irresistible urge to click the X.

Everyone hates pop-up ads. And man, are they hard to ignore.
